Reading Order[]

There are no recommended readings before reading Distant Sky, although you could consider reading Terror Man as the MC appears in Distant Sky. However, it is not absolutely necessary, as the story makes sense on its own without knowing the events in Terror Man. The protagonist of Neolithic Girl also make an appearance here, bringing together with some lore. Reading this ahead could shed some insight on the final arc of the series, although again it is not absolutely necessary

Finally, Jungwoo was attacked by the vampire bugs shown in Distant Sky. He noted that these types of insect he had never seen; implying that these insects are not of Earth but were demonic creatures.

Theories[]

CAUTION: HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD

Branching Timeline Theory[]

Note: Parallel Dimensions & characters (ex. two Hanuels) are confirmed due to Terror Vs. Revival and Marco's Travel to Multiverse Webtoon. However, the theory of the two ships from the ending of Island and Distant Sky isn't quite confirmed which this section will talk about.

  • In the ending of Distant Sky, Heyool Shin and presumably Haneul Kang went back to the past and succeeded. However this is perhaps not the case. It would seem that either they went to another dimension (this is unlikely) or rather they have went to the past but it will only branch to a new timeline. Thus the events of Distant Sky still happens while the new timeline now exist together. Furthermore, there are assumptions and hypothesize that there are two Heyool Shins and Haneul Kangs. There are two evidences in Island Part 2 and Terror Vs Revival that supports the theory of two people and the branching timeline:
  • Let's start with the two people hypothesis. In Distant Sky, the spaceship landed in the forest with Heyool's pod suddenly outside of it. Furthermore, it is shown that she landed somewhere in South Korea, near a huge city. However, in Island Part 2, there is a contradiction. The spaceship actually landed near Jeju Island along with debris from that dimension. It then landed into ocean as helicopters and reports documented the strange occurrence. Furthermore, the ship from Island is from the USA while the ship from Distant Sky is from China.
    • Due to these strange contradictions, this would assume that there maybe two Haneuls and Heyools but this could be an author's mistake. But if it is not, there is also implications of different dimensions and timelines that had happen. As of now, this theory is quite unclear and hard to figure out. However, this is supported by Terror Vs. Revival:
  • In Terror Vs. Revival, Yak reveals to Suki Kang that the destruction of Earth is impossible to change. If someone was to go back to the past by time travel and changes something, it only creates a new timeline/world/dimension and thus the original world is still doom to be destroyed. This is the grandfather paradox:
Grandfather Paradox

Grandfather Paradox

Counter Theory[]

There is a counter theory against soley of the two different spaceships from the ending of Island and Distant Sky from the previous theory. The spaceship from Island could be the ship that was shown in Distant Sky season 4 where Changuk Lee came across in the sea and explores inside to find dead astronauts testing. If this is the case, then it defeats the previous theory and explains why there are clear difference between the two. This is also evidence that the spaceship from Island had buildings also present which could be from the spaceship's surroundings when it crashlanded.

Thus, Heyool and Haneul did end up on Jeju Island. With all of that said, there is one existing contradiction that counters THIS theory is that the spaceship from Island is from the USA as the flag is shown on the hull while the spaceship from Distant Sky season 4 doesn't, as it was made by China. What is also confusing is that in Terror Vs Revival, it was said that the ship from Island is made by China which contradicts itself. This could an error by either authors or it means that this theory is not correct and there maybe some existing future plot. Another problem is that if it is the ship from season 4, why is Haneul and Heyool in that ship in the first place? Or is their ship and this ship showed up in the same place?

Plot Overview (Chronological)[]

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Before the Disaster[]

FOLLOWING INFO IS LONG

20 Years Before the Disaster
Shuttles have been sent to the Goldilock Zone in Mercury, around 40 shuttles in total.[10]

12 Years Before the Disaster
The Hubble Telescope launched by NASA spotted a giant GRB (Gamma-Ray Burst) caused by a supernova bursts and emits 1000 thousand times the amount of radiation as the sun. After measuring the trajectory, NASA was able to determine the rays would penetrate Earth in 80 years. Half of the ozone layer would be destroyed and all organism would be exposed to the deadly radiation and would either die or become mutated. The nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere would separate causing a massive amount of smog. The sunlight would be blocked out completely. It would take ten of thousands of years for the Earth to recover, causing a lengthy polar ice age. NASA urged all the heads of state of every country to prepare for this level 1 disaster. Korea's government decides to join China in reaching out to the world-renowned biotechnologist, Dr. Kang. Project Sky was thus started to create a new humanity through gene manipulation.[11]

The government begins to build a drop design shaft, a nuclear mine, to reach mercury's core for Plan Zero. The plan was put to a stop as Plan A and Plan B were developed.[12]

10 Years Before the Disaster
At the Disaster Preparatory Committee meeting, Dr. Euicheol Kang proposes Project Sky as humanity would be extinguished if it failed.[13]

??? Years Before the Disaster
Changuk Lee wakes up from a nightmare where Jupiter enters Earth's orbit, the moon is destroyed and Earth is completely taken into Jupiter's gravitational field. His wife tells him that he must be too stressed out and shows him a report she just received from the Naro Space Center, which has a table of the orbital period of the Kuiper Belt that they had asked from NASA, showing everything is ok. She grabs the paper and tells him to spend more time with her, saying she is reading to answer Changuk's marriage proposal with a yes.[14]

The government begins to build emergency shelters around the country in order to prepare for the disaster to come.[15] Part of the army is being trained in preparation for the disaster for 2 years already before the disaster happened. These soldiers were in fact trained to eliminate survivors.[16]

Various experiments are being conducted in Severance Hospital. Transport trucks carry animals from the Seoul Zoo to the Hospital to do animal testing, presumably for completion of Project Sky under Dr. Kang.[17]

Mrs. Byun and her husband would take their child Jaeh to the playground. While Jaeh's dad would clean the playground, Mrs. Byun would read to Jaeh. Since the two often smelled like the hospital, Yeool and her friends would call them the doctor couple.[18] Bitnara is late for something and rushes out of the house, Mrs. Byun asks Bitnara if she can help watch Jaeh for just a few minutes as she needs to go up to get her keys. When seeing Jaeh smile, Bitnara gets upset as she is already late and is delayed even more because of Jaeh, so she scares her with a loud "boo". To Bitnara's shock, Jaeh begins to have a seizure and panics, calling out to Mrs. Byun who rushes to check on the baby. Bitnara, however, says she has to leave because she is already too late. Mrs. Byun takes Jaeh to the doctors who say she will be ok, as it was just a temporary shock and tell her to not leave the baby out in the open for too long as it is quite cold.[19]

The White Cult in Jeju Island begin to do experiments in their deer farm, in their Baekrok Lab. Presumably Heyool's grandma and mom were running the farm as a coverup for the cult. [20]

Beginnings of Disaster[]

FOLLOWING INFO IS LONG
Sometimes begins to happen at the quantum level that defies the laws of relativity of the macro world.[21]

The disaster begins in China. Sinkholes began to appear and half the population died in half a day.[22] A week later, there was a revolt in the Chinese government. With help of White, they revolutionary group are about to take over and get control of the nuclear weapons. They launched them all around the world, all 250 of them.[23]

All the high-ranking officers and generals are summoned at the Blue House for a top secret meeting. Only the high-ranking officers are allowed to enter, while their assistants or other officers wait outside. After the meeting, all high-ranking officers and the military advisory group are dispatched to Daegu, while the rest of the corps are left awaiting order. 5 hours later, the huge earthquake occurs. The corps is wiped out and lose all communication with the main force.[24]

Haneul's mom wakes up Haneul, telling him he is going to be late. As they are having breakfast, Haneul's mom tells both Haneul and Dr. Kang to stop looking at their phones. In the background, the TV reports about the recent issue of "Nature" by the DPC. As Haneul is walking to school with his classmates, they talk about an online game the night before. In class, Haneul mentions how he will probably not get into college with his grades and how his life is so boring.[25]

Heyool receives notification that she was admitted to the Physics Department of Seoul University.[26] On the way to school, Heyool and her classmates pass by TVs that are reporting about the "Nature" issue that published a report by the DPC. All her classmates are congratulating her and saying that Boram, Heyool's classmate, did not get in as she failed to hand in the assignment in time and get the principal’s recommendation, as Heyool had accidentally spilled water over that assignment. As Heyool and her classmates walk to school, the police cars and trucks with "Seoul Zoo Special Transport Vehicle" labelled on them pass by.[27] Heyool receives a text from her mother asking how she has been doing and that after 10 years, she wants to reconnect. Though Heyool tears up, she is still hurt from her mother's abandonment and texts back to her mother to never contact her again. That day, she meets a blind person in the basement and shows him kindness.[28]

At class, everyone is congratulating Heyool and Boram gets annoyed and tells them to be quiet as she is trying to concentrate. Other students just call her a snob and that she is just mad at herself for being second.[29]

Heyools goes to the bathroom and as she's there, she overhears her two classmates talking about how Boram was not able to get in Seoul University because Heyool spilled water over it. A classmate with glasses tells her friend that she had asked Heyool about it, but Heyool responded like it was none of her business (when in reality, Heyool had blanked out at the moment as she remember the incident and blamed herself). The two classmates discuss that mostly Heyool did it on purpose, calling her a spiteful b**tch[30]

Back in the classroom, one of her classmates remind Heyool about the "Cheering Contest for Sophomores" and that all the students that passed the college entrance exam were getting together for choreography practice. She tells her to hurry and change into her skirt and gym clothes. After Heyool changes into her gym clothes, she notices all the students laughing at her, she hurries to a mirror and looks at the back of her shirt.[31] On the back it says: "I'm a piece of trash that cheats her way to Seoul University". Her classmates obviously set her up. She runs to the bathroom to wash it off, but it won't come off. Suddenly, Boram enters the bathrooms, tells Heyool she knows that her spilling water over her assignment was an accident. Boram proceeds to give her another gym sweatsuit, but tells her that it is not her's but that a lady who looks like Heyool gave it to her. This lady had asked Boram to help Heyool out and to check on her in the bathroom. It turns out this was Heyool's mother.[32]

At the Severance Hospital, Bitnara is waiting for her mom to finish the tests for Yeool. She asks Bitnara to help get the medicine while she takes Yeool to get a blood test. Bitnara gets upset, saying that Yeool is always getting sick and because of her, they aren't able to go shopping as promised. In the meantime, on the news, there is a headline reporting that Dr. Kang was successfully able to extract genetic traits from the Tardigrade stem cells as well as the recent issue of "Nature" report by the DPC. Suddenly, there's a earthquake and people run outside to see a huge sinkhole.[33]

Haneul Kang is talking with his friends about how he wished a war would break out so he wouldn't have to study again. In class, Haneul falls asleep until everyone has already left the classroom when his friend wakes him up. As they leave to go to the internet café, Haneul runs into his father who is waiting for him. So instead, Haneul ends up going to a restaurant with his dad, Dr. Euicheol Kang. Dr. Kang tells his son to order anything to which Haneul replies that he ate only 3 hours ago. It is an awkward moment and just as Dr. Kang seems to be saying something important to Haneul, he receives an emergency phone call for work. Haneul sarcastically tells him to go ahead and go to his research. As Haneul leaves the restaurant, he notices trucks pass by that have "Seoul Zoo Special Transport Vehicle" labelled on them and various police cars that follow. As Haneul is distracted by the scene and accidentally bumps into Bitnara's sister, Yeool, pushing her down. Haneul immediately apologizes and stretches his arms to help her up when Bitnara immediately interferes and scolds him to look where he is walking. Haneul apologies again and then goes into the bus.[34]

Haneul is thinking of what he will be doing that night as his father would probably be late at work. Just as that thought is crossing him, all the sudden the bus shakes and comes to a stop. The passengers look outside and see the sinkholes. Shortly after, the bus also falls into a sinkhole.[35]

Heyool and her classmates are rehearsing for the "Cheering Contest for Sophomores" when they notice the volcano erupting. Shortly after, the students fall into a sinkhole. Heyools finds herself in the dark and finds Boram, neither of them knows what is going. Two other people find them and the four stick together to find out what is going on.[36]

Bitnara returns home with her mom and Yeool. Bitnara's mom leaves Bitnara and Yeool under the care of their uncle and presumably leaves to run some errands. Another earthquake occurs and their house falls into a sinkhole. Bitnara's uncle is crushed by a building and dies leaving Bitnara and Yeool by themselves.[37]

Surviving the Disaster[]

FOLLOWING INFO IS LONG
Right after the disaster, China begins to run trials on civilian space shuttles. It has "HOPE" written on the side of it. The first civilization to space is a CEO of some company. As the shuttle launches, all the sudden it begins to shake. They contact control tower saying there is a problem with the ship's hull and ask why they didn't check today's climate. All the sudden everything turns black. The CEO begins panicking and complaining that they assumed him this was safe. Shortly after, they see Jupiter and the shuttle begins falling back to the ground and crashes.[38]

As the center for the visually impaired falls into the sinkhole, the owner or supervisor begins to mistreat the blind people and use them to search for food.[39] During this time, Dr. Kang has continued to do research and some point in time, he loses track of his cellphone, which was picked up by the general. After three days, Haneul wakes up from the crash.[40] He realizes that everyone in the bus is dead except himself. He picks up his phone and sees a message from his father, telling him to go to his research lab in Severance Hospital.[41] Haneul takes hours to arrive at the Severance Hospital due to all the debris, when it was only a 10 min walk. A blind child appears behind him warning him to not go to Severance Hospital as she heard gunshots and screams as the police has been shooting all the survivors. However, Haneul goes anyways. The blind girl's owner shows up and scolds her and beats her mocking her, saying what help could a blind girl provide.[42]

At the same time, Dr. Kang and two other doctors, Mrs. Byun and her husband, have been doing research non-stop for 3 days. Mrs. Byun mentions how it must be hard for Dr. Kang not knowing if his family was alive or not after the news of the disaster in Seoul. Dr. Kang decides to wash his face and look for his phone to tell Haneul to not come to Severance Hospital, however, he cannot find it as it was already stolen. As he walks out the room, he encounters the general. The general asks him how the research is going, but Dr. Kang does not answer as he is still resentful that the general killed the survivors.

The general explains that it was necessary as if people amassed at the hospital in panic, they would not be able to continue their research, thus a necessary sacrifice. However, Dr. Kang disagrees. The general explains that 10 years back at the Disaster Preparatory Committee meeting, Dr. Kang mentioned that if Project Sky failed, humanity be extinguished, thus the general would whatever it takes to make the project successful. At the moment, Haneul shows up, and Dr. Kang is both glad he is alive, but also shocked and confused as to how he got in as police would've stopped him. Just as they are about to embrace, the general shoots Haneul and tells Dr. Kang that there is no time left as the disaster errupted earlier than expect and that the only way to save his son would be to finish Project Sky.[43]

In anger, Dr. Kang charges at the general and at that moment, the hospital begins to shake and sinks. As it collapses, debris falls and kills Mrs. Byun's daughter Jaeah who is in the incubator, driving her mad. Dr. Kang takes the wounded Haneul to the hospital bed and administers Project Sky. Just as Dr. Kang is about to put the mask on Haneul, he explains how it will affect his memory temporarily, as the reagent will cause strain to the temporal lobe, but that the memories would return.[44]

Hanuel and Dr. Kang hide in some bunker[45] and during that time, Dr. Kang nurses him and helps him work through the side effects of the reagent so that Haneul wouldn't go insane.[46]

Since Mrs. Byun and her husband both go mad, Mrs. Byun begins hunting for children's hearts to replace Jeah's.[47]

Ever since the disaster, Bitnara takes care of Yeool at their house, going out once in a while to get food and supplies. At one time, when Bitnara and Yeool outside, they see Jeah’s dad from a distance. It turns out he is skinning people, looking for children’s skin for Jeah. Yeool wants to look and shines the light on him, which attracts his attention and he begins to chase them, but they run away successfully.[48]

Heyool's party of four continue to survive helping each other. They survive at least 40 days together and find a place to stack food. Either they find a camera or already had one so they take a photo and label it D+40 days.[49] At some point in time, Heyool's party encounter Dr. Kang who tells them that they are just in a big sinkhole and the people above would rescue them. He tells them to reach the end of the distant sky, which is at VIP room 4 and would find a way out.[50]

However, Yeool's condition is worsening and she begins to cough blood. She reads the texts from her mother that tell her to follow the instructions on TV and not panic. However, the at some point in time the signal cuts off and Bitnara is unable to reach her parents. Bitnara remembers a show that talked about tuberculosis and writes down the list of meds that she needs for Yeool. She lies to Yeool that their uncle will take care of them, but in reality, he has been crushed by a building.[51]

Bitnara walks all the way to Severance Hospital and finds the children's hospital. However the door is locked so Bitnara begins calling out for help to see if someone on the other side can open it for her. Mrs. Byun hears the commotion, however, does not respond. Bitnara begins to look for another way and notices the Seoul Zoo Transport Trucks as well as all the animal corpses. All the sudden she notices the door of the children hospital open. As he walks in, she gets hit by a baseball bat by Mrs. Byun. Mrs. Byun continues to swing at her and Bitnara is fortunately saved by Heyool who covers her mouth and hides her.[52]

Heyool distracts Mrs. Byun as to let Bitnara get away. Bitnara goes to pick up her phone and as she enters the children's hospital, she recognizes it and remembers the hole that appeared in front it. As she walks near it, a hand crawls out of the hole.[53]Jeah’s dad crawls up from the hole and Bitnara recognizes him and begins to run away. As Bitnara runs, she falls and drops her phone. As she looks for her phone, Jeah’s dad shows up and grabs her leg and stabs her. In pain, Bitanra kicks him and the floor below Jaeh’s dad breaks off sending him into the abyss. Bitnara makes her way back to hospital and encounters Heyool again.[54]

In the meantime, Mrs. Byun successfully finds Bitnara and Yeool’s home.[55]

Bitnara passes out and Heyool treats her wounds. Apparently Bitnara didn’t know that she is in a hole. After Heyool helps Bitnara collect the medicine she needs, she heads out, but Bitnara asks why she is here in the hospital. Heyool tells her that she is looking for VIP Room 4, which may be a way out of the darkness. Just as Bitnara asks Heyool to take her and her sister together, they hear a loud sound, which turns out to be huge gorilla.[56]They try to hide from the gorilla, but it finds them and grabs Heyool by the head. Bitnara finds her phone and flashes her light at the gorilla to see it holding two to three heads by the hair. Bitnara runs away in fear. The gorilla throws Heyool to the ground. Heyool notices lamp oil below the gorilla and throws a lighter but it lands too far and does not set the gorilla on fire. Just as the gorilla is about to crush heyool with a rock, it is set on fire by Bitnara. The gorilla falls out of the window and lands outside the hospital.[57]

As the begin to walk out the room, they encounter Mrs. Byun who is holding an needle with anesthesia to Yeool’s neck. Mrs. Byun’s husband also shows up. [58]Mrs. Byun knocks Bitnara unconscious and by the time she wakes up, she and Yeool are both tied to a bed. As Mrs. Byun is about to remove Yeool's heart. Bitnara cries out to Mrs. Byun, saying that Jaeh's heart is like that because of her fault and recalls a time when Mrs. Byun had asked Bitnara to take care of Jaeh for a few minuts, but because Bitnara was upset because she was late, she decides to scares her with a loud "boo", which causes Jaeh to have a seizure. Though later, in a doctor's checkup, the doctors say Jaeh is fine, Bitnara doesn't know so tells Mrs. Byun that it's her fault and to take her heart instead, but she still ends up taking Yeool's heart, intentionally waking her up before cutting her chest open.[59]

In the meantime, Mrs. Byun’s husband takes Heyool into another room and attemps to rape her.[60] Heyool’s friends show up in time to save Heyool and Boram also shows up to save Bitnara, but not in time to save Yeool. The party tells Heyool that they found a lab and VIP Room 4 with the ladder that leads to the top.[61]

Seeing Yeool dead, Bitnara goes crazy and smashes Mrs. Byun’s head. [62]

Heyool and the party find their way to VIP room 4. In the counter, there are studies about Tardigrade. Heyool looks around and wonders what if they are not suppose to open the door. However, the party believes that Heyool is just anxious. All the sudden Bitnara shows up and demands their hearts. Heyool tries to stop her but she slashes Heyool with the cutter. At that moment, the other three successfully open the door and a wave of immense heat rushes in and burns up Bitnara. They close the door immediately. [63]

Heyool and her party of 4 begin to discuss to find another way out. They come to the conclusion that disaster has also struck above. However, it seems like Heyool has a high fever. They begin to wonder if perhaps what Dr. Kang told them was all a lie and that there is no one coming to rescue them and that the government probably already knew and were only saving themselves. The guy with glasses also wonders if it is true that they are just in a sinkhole as they can’t see the sun and technically should’ve died from the pressure or oxygen deprivation and corpses outside don’t even decompose. All the sudden heyool has a seizure. The guy with glasses goes to the hospital to find medicine and encounters Dr. Kang.[64]

The crew is attempting to treat Heyool. Dr. Kang shows up and diagnoses her with blood poisoning caused by tetanus infection. He says he can only do so much with antibioltics and needs surgery. He tells them if the blood pressure lowers anymore, she might die. Boram gets angry at him, saying he lied about the end of the Distant Sky. Dr. Kang is shocked they were able to reach VIP room No. 4, and asks them if there weren't any soliders or poilce. THey respond that they opened the door and were almost burnt to death. Dr. Kang then realizes things are worse than expectd and begin to explain to them why it all happened.[65]

Dr. Kang takes Heyool into his care. Some time in between, he also finds Bitnara and takes her into his care as well. He treats both of them with the reagent. Bitnara wakes up and begins to take pictures. Dr. Kang tells her not move around and asks her why she is taking pictures. She says that she feels like her memory might come back if she looks at the pictures. Dr. Kang then proceeds to explain the loss of memory in the hippocampus is due to a cerebral infraction in the temporal lobe, and how it is just temporary. Bitnara mentions how she feels like she has a sister but can't remember anything. Heyool wakes up and Dr. Kang moves over to attend her. Dr. Kang tells her how he was just an ordinary professor before being summoned by the government and how he used to research about survival guides in situations like this in the DPC.

He continues explaining how he gave her the reagent, which is a type of adult stem cell that the team had been developing. Dr. Kang explains that her wounds will heal at an incredible speed, but since it is experimental and had not pass clinical trials, wounds might return to their original state. When that cycle repeats three or four times, memory should return. He also mentioned that effects of the stem cell were not long term and recovery could be maintained for at most two or three months. Cells would go into atrophy and the immune system could become weaker than the average person. Bitnara does not understand anything Dr. Kang says, but is just concerned that she can get better and see her family. Dr. Kang apologizes saying that children shouldn't have to go through this and that there must be some hope in all of it.[66]

Later on, Bitnara remembers Yeool and begins losing her mind, breaking things and attacks Dr. Kang demanding his heart to save Yeool. Jungwoo saves Dr. Kang, shooting Bitnara with a tranquilizer. Jungwoo says he will not follow him any longer to persuade him and that this would be the last time, asking Dr. Kang where he hid the completed sample. He threatens Dr. Kang with the tranquilizer, which has an anestheitc for gorrillas, fatal for humans. However, Dr. Kang remains steadfast to his answer that it was a failure. Jungwoo fires the shot, but intentionally misses, saying that he admires his steadfast character, as now Jungwoo knows Dr. Kang will keep the secret till death, of not betraying his morality and hopes he will stay safe if he encounters the DPC.[67]

Bitnara wakes up from the tranquilizer and pulls it out. She seems have come back to her senses and notices Heyool, saying that she's really pretty. Bitnara takes off her bandages and looks at herself through the phone and immediately chucks the phone at the appearance of her face. She begins to remember everything from Yeool's death to killing Mrs. Byun to being burnt. She breaks down and begins knocking stuff down and grabs a scalpel to commit suicide. Heyool wakes and stops her in the last minute. They both sit by the bed and Bitnara apologies for the wound on her cheek. Bitnara confesses she has trouble controlling her emotions and actions. Heyool tells Bitnara that ending her own life is stupid thing to do. She talks about how there are many prestigious medical journals before the disaster, such as treatment for skin regeneration. Heyool tells her there are more things to worry about than perhaps being "hated" in the future. Just as she finishes her sentence, Heyool passes out becuase of high fever. Bitnara places her on the hospital bed and puts a blanket to cover her. She cries over her and says to her "thank you".[68]

The government send troops down the sinkhole in order to check on the situation as well as track down Dr. Kang. They are quite surprised to find that there are so many survivors even months after the incident. They began to kill all the survivors they could find. Unless they kill all the survivors, they cannot go back to the surface.[69]

The government is finally able to track Dr. Kang, so Dr. Kang has to let Haneul escape through a contraption on the floor. Before sending him away, he tells Haneul to go to Severance Hospital to find Heyool.[70] Dr. Kang commits suicide before the government officers can find him, but not before hiding a message in his mouth.[71] The soldiers in the sinkhole lost contact with the main force after that.[72]

Haneul and Heyool's Encounter (Part 1)[]

Heyool awakes from the hospital with some lapses in her memory. She is able to remember that Bitnara attacked her and was bedridden in the warehouse. Haneul follows her. As Heyool travels back to the warehouse, she finds her friends hanging dead. Boram, her friend, appears and explains how Dr. Kang took her away to treat her. Boram shows Heyool a journal (presummably by written by Dr. Kang). The doctor had explained what caused the disaster, but Boram and the group could not understand at the time. The only thing they understood was that the ground above was radioactive and no longer hospitable and that Dr. Kang was trying to develop a medicine for people to survive even in that environment, but it had failed. Boram tells Heyool that this was the end of the world and so they plan to commit suicide together. Boram jumps off first and then Heyool jumps off, but she then changes her mind, and tries to climb on top of Boram, however, she still slips and is chocking to death, but is saved by Haneul. Haneul tells her to not give up.[73]

After saving Heyool, Heyool just walks away, saying that she never asked anyone to ssave her. As she walks away, Haneul calls her by name, which confuses Heyool. Haneul promises to tell her how he knows her name if she follows him. Haneul takes Heyool to the emergercy shelter that was installed by the government in case of emergencies (the largest being in Gwanghwamun). Supposedly, they were suppose to announce it to the citizens, but the disaster came sooner than expected.[74]

Haneul takes out some ramen and begins to cook it. At first Heyool refuses, but she is so hungry, she ends up eating it anyways. Haneul begins to explains that it was his father who saved her and though he knows what caused the disaster, it was not the right time to tell her. Haneul's father had regretting telling Heyool's group the truth too early on.[75]

As they sleep, Haneul reminiscences when his father let him escape when the government found their hiding spot, telling him to find Heyool. At that moment, Heyool wakes up suddingly from a nightmare and begins having hallucinations as the side effect of the reagent. She loses her mind and starts chocking Haneul. Her arms are too strong to break off, but finally Haneul is able to push her arms away and Heyool finally snaps out of it. Haneul explains how because of the spreading of the reagent, her memories will begin to fade, maybe even lose months worth of memories temporarily. Even after the memories recover, she would still have sudden flashbacks. But Haneul comforts her, saying he will help her and hugs her.[76]

Haneul and Heyool stay in the shelter for a while, gathering food, fixing things. However, Heyool begins to forget Haneul. She feels drowsy and wants to get some air. Haneul tries to stop her saying its dangerous, but is stopped by a headache. Haneul recovers and follows Heyool outside. There they both look at a banner that congratulates Heyool in her admission to Seoul University. That's when Haneul realizes that Heyool is a senior at school, as he himself is a junior. However, Heyool can't seem to remember the fact that she was admitted to Seoul University. She begins to panic, as she fears she will forget everything. Haneul tries to calm her down, but bombs begin to drop from the sky. They avoid the explosions and as burning ruble is able to fall on Heyool, Haneul pushes her away, getting burnt himself. That's when Heyool realizes that Haneul also has the reagent as he recovers from the burnt. Hanuel didn't want to tell Heyool about it as to not to let her panic. Haneul explains to Heyool that it was his father, Dr. Kang that helped him work through the side effects, or he, himself, would also have gone insane. Heyool responds saying that though she is prety good at taking care of herself, she is ok with them surviving together. They end up going to a shop to grab some spray cans and begin spraying the message: "Look up at the distant sky".[77][78].

Heyool and Haneul begin spraying more and more messages, using florencent spray as well so the message can be seen in the dark. Haneul asks what the message (Go to the Distant Sky) means and whether they could've used a simpler message. Heyool explains how no matter how much they simplify it, she would forget. She feels like in times of desparation, she will remember it better, and will remmeber it was her who wrote it. Heyools talks about how she still wants to see the blue sky, despite knowing the surface is full of radiation. Haneul takes it seriously and suggests that they go up, as he felt that his father, Dr. Kang, did all this so they wouldn't have to stay in this hole. They both agree to make the journey and begin to pack up. As they begin walking, Heyool says she wants to go back to the academy to get a picture of her mother. Even though Heyool hated her mother, she was still her only family. Haneul tells Heyool that he will go grab it for her, as his academy is nearby too. When Haneul arrives and opens the locker, it's full of the leeching insects. As Haneul takes the picture, the buliding collapses and crushes Haneul. Haneul regenerates, but loses his memory. He sees the message left by Heyool, but cannot understand it and writes on a nametage "who is the Distant Sky?". He feels like he is suppose to do something with seomeone, but cannot remember. His wounds alos begin to open up again. He sees a light in the distance and sees Heyool spraying "Everything has distance"[79] on the building. His memory returns and he calls out to Heyool as he runs towards her, but an earthquake happens. And both of them fall.[80]

As some point in time, the group of blind people decide to revolt against their supervisor and begin to take arms, killing any survivors and eating the corpses.[citation needed]

Haneul wakes up, turns on the flashlight on his phone and sees dead corpses everywhere. He seems to have lost his memory and can't remember anything since the disaster. He hears noises and walks outside calling for help. On the ground, there is a newspaper that has the heading "Premotion of volcanic erruption". Haneul hears some noises and panics flashing his cellphone around, but not seeing anything. He faints and falls to ground, when he wakes up, he realizes that vampire bugs are sucking on his leg. However, after shaking off these bugs, his wounds continue to bleed. Haneul sees an animal hospital and tries to open the door, prying it open as he can heard sounds inside. All the sudden, someone covers his mouth and pulls him away, telling him to follow her if he doesn't want to die. Haneul pushes her away and it turns out that it's Heyool and she had saved him as the hospital behind them collapses.[81]

It seems Heyool also lost her memory as she cannot recognize Haneul. They hear a noise and as they look up, there is a train that falls from a hole in the sky. They dodge the train, but drop their phones. Heyool tells Haneul to quickly turn on the lights. Haneul panics and finds the phone, shinning the light on Heyool who is being bitten by the vampire bugs. Haneul sees light at the end of the tunnel and picks up Heyool to carry her on his back. They approach the light and realize it is the train's lights. Haneul recognizes the bulidings and realizes they are near Gangnam Station. Haneul finds it odd that he can only see a few buildings but can't see past it, so he decides to explore. However, as he walks forward, he notices someone trying to break the lights.[82]

The blind madmen breaks the lights and the vampire bugs begin to crawl up Haneul and into his mouth. In panic runs and drops Heyool and falls into a body of water. He finds a phone and is able to get the flashlight to turn on and begins looking for Heyool. After looking body after body, he finds someone wearing a red jumpsuit, believing it is Heyool. However, it seems like she was already eaten by the bugs. Haneul breaks down and is afraid he, too, will die. Suddenly he notices a fire hydrant, inside is a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a map of the supermarket he is in. He decides he will live on and look for food. He covers the dead body’s face and says his goodbyes. As he is looking through the mall, he notices a newspaper, Daily Seoul, that talks about 50,000 people gone missing in Gangnam Station. The article talks about how a UN report was made regarding the 811 Gangnam Incident as the worst disaster ever occurring in Korea. The report goes on to talk about the cause of the disaster, but the rest is under rubble. Haneul tries to pull it out, but ends up ripping it. On the backside, there is an article with a heading “Seoul, the Burning Hell” and some text about a 3rd shelter at City Hall. Haneul sees the info about the shelter at City Hall and decides to go there, perhaps there would be more surviviors. Hanuel finally finds where the food is but hears a strange noise behind him. As he turns, he sees a manic with a chairsaw attacking him. He blocks it immediately with his ax..[83]

As the chainsaw is about to reach Haneul, a piece of debris falls and knocks the maniac out. Haneul begins to run as the building collapses. He picks a cup ramen and begins eating the raw noodles. He decides to go to City Hall, as there should be people there that could explain what is going on. Haneul notices a broadcasting station and sees spotlights, turning on the swtich. He begins to look for food and comes to a conveninece store, but the food is all taken. He then notices the message "Look up at the Distant Sky". He doesn't really understand it and walks outside. He then notices there is a dark wall that the light doesn't reach further. As Haneul approaches, he realizes that it is a real wall of mud. As Haneul explores the wall, he notices light in the distance and begins running towards it believe there are people there, without realizing there is a cliff. Haneul falls off and grabs on to the cliff. Just as he is about to fall, Heyool grabs him to pull him up.[84] Heyool had woken up when Haneul threw him off his back. Hanuel thought Heyool had died but it was mostly likely Heyool's classmate. Heyool keeps telling Haneul to turn the light off. All the sudden Haenul charges at Heyool, but it is to save her from the incoming dog. They run away and the dogs chase them. Haneul hits a few of them with his bag. They are able to get into a building and close the door. Hanuel asks Heyool about the disaster and Heyool explains that there was a mushroom cloud over Cheonggyesan, though not nuclear. She tells Haneul that it has been 62 days since the incident. All the sudden mud falls from the sky and as they try to remove the mud that covered the door, they see a mud tidal wave from the distance.[85]

Hanuel and Heyool begin running but are overwhelmed by the tidal wave of mud. However, they are able to survive with Haneul on top of Heyool. Haneul wakes up but there is a steel pipe penetrating through him from the collapse. They also can't seem to move, or the weight that Hanuel is holding on his back would collapse. As they are stuck, Haneul tells Heyool to reach in his pocket, as there is some leftover instant noodles. Heyool finds a door handle behind her and they are able to fall through a door. Heyool still cannot trust Haneul and throws about the noodles. Heyool tells Haneul to stay still as she has some first aid in her warehouse.[86]

Heyool uses a videocamera's night vision to travel back to the warehouse she and her friends had stocked up goods. He passed by the man-eating dogs and blind maniacs who are cutting up the corpses to cook them. She sees them pick up one of her classmates (as she is wearing their uniform) and then one of them uses a chainsaw to cut off her head. All the sudden one of them appears right in front of Heyool. Heyool remains quite and he walks away, but then Heyool accidentally steps on a can and he swings his knife at her, almost hitting her. At that moment, the vampire bugs begin to climb up her face and into her eyes. She can barely hold it any longer and the blind man is about to grab her face when the dogs begin attacking them. The two parties begin to fight, giving Heyool an opportunity to escape. Heyool notices blood on her, but can't determine if it is just blood or her period. She arrives at the Gangnam station and realizes the mud rain cleared a path. She notices a writting on the wall ("Reach the Distant Sky", but the building is really tall, making her wonder how someone was able to write on it (in reality, it is because it is the floor that has been lifted up by the earthquakes).

Furthermore, she remembers a few weeks ago, this writting was not there (forgetting it she who wrote it). Heyool arrives at the warehouse and begins getting the meds and looks at her photo with the crew of four, telling herself that she doesn't to make any more acquaintances. Just as she is grabbing some pads, she smells a bloody smell and realizes there is a blind person right behind her.[87] Heyool avoids his knife slash and backs up to a wall, covering her mouth to avoid being detected. However, he still finds her and she grabs a bottle and knocks him out. Heyool runs out and meets the rest of the blind people. She immediately freezes as they walk pass her. The blind people rush into the warehouse and set it on fire. Heyool breaks down as that's where she had been storing all her food. As she walks, she trips over and falls. As she get's up she sees her friends who had committed suicide by hanging on a rope. As Heyool considers suicide, she remembers Haneul and decides she cannot leave him to die and walks back.[88]

When Heyool returns to check on Haneul, she can't find him in his original spot, but suddenly he shows up and it seems he was able to remove the piece of steel and his wounds were miraculously healed. Heyool becomes increasingly suspicious of Haneul as he doesn't remember anything about the past few months, his phone still has charge, and Haneul can't even remember his own name. Haneul keeps following Heyool, telling Heyool to please let him go with her. He promises not to be a bother. Heyool agrees but tells him no more questions. However, Haneul still asks what happened and Heyool accidentally answers explains it's a sinkhole. She stops talking and they get to the station and ponder whether to go down to the subway. They hear noises of the blind maniacs and Haneul accidentally trips and falls down, Heyool follows. Three blind maniacs also follow them down there. They run down the subway as they are being chased but hit a dead end. However, the door is locked with a code.[89] There happens to be hint drawn next to the keypad. Heyool is able to discifer it and they are able to get in. However, as they go past the door, they are met with a tiger. They try to go back, but notice the chainsaw cutting through the door. They both pass out and by the time they wake up, the tiger seems to have disappeared and the blind maniacs seemed to have left. The two begin walking to the other side of the tunnel where they feel heat and see light.[90]

They enter a place that is filled with lava. Haneul is confused because there is no volcano in Seoul. Heyool recalls a discussion with his party of 4 where they had predicted this may happen. Heyool jumps down to the platform below to walk along the pathway on the side of the wall. Haneul reluctantly follows. As they walk, they notice Yi Sun Shin's Statue, which is near City Hall as well as building from City Hall. Apparently, they floated across the lava all the way to Gangnam. Because of the smell of surfur, Heyool almost passes out, but as Henauel has rhinitis, he is not as affected. All the sudden his wound in his abdomen begins to open. All the sudden Haneul looks back and sees the tiger.[91] The tiger approaches to eat his head when suddenly Jungwoo saves him. Haneul sees him and gathers the strength up to pick up Heyool on his back. He begins walking towards where Jungwoo is, but then the platform crumbles and Haneul jumps to grab onto the ladder. Jungwoo approaches them to save them, but tells Haneul that he can only save one of them. Haneul decides to save Heyool and so Jungwoo drags her up as Haneul falls. When Heyool wakes up, she realizes she's on the other side but cannot find Haneul and begins calling out to him.[92]

Haneul apparently did not die and wakes up on a upper ledge above the ladder. His wound is still open. He crawls up to a corridor full of vampire bugs and finally cross but the bugs begin crawling on him and he falls into a pile of water. He struggles to find an opening to breathe.[93] He finds a gap but is struggling to get out of the water. He is able to get his head out of the water to call out for help and Heyool hears him. She runs to him and just as Haneul is drowning, she pulls him out. As they continue walking, Heyool tells Haneul about Yun Dong-Ju's poem "Sky, Wind, and Stars". In this poem, sky represents hope. His message was that even in the hardest, darkness times, the sky will always be there. Heyool tells Haneul how she wants to see the sky, Haneul agrees and then suddenly remembers his name.[94]

Haneul and Heyool's Encounter (Part 2)[]

The two finally arrive at the end of the tunnel where there are a group police and a bunch of lights. Haneul and Heyool they think they are being rescued, but in reality, the police are there to kll off all the survivors. By the time the two notice the pile of bodies near them, it's too late and they fire shots and kill both of them. As the police approach the bodies to check they are dead, Jungwoo fires a few shoots causing the above buildings to collapse crushing the lights and releasing the animals from the zoo that were in the transport trucks. The tigers kill some of the police and Jungwoo finishes them off with more falling buildings.[95]

Jungwoo rescues Haneul and takes him to a bunker so he can recover. Haneul wakes up and find water and food prepared for him. As he explores the room, he sees some top secret documents from the DPC and also notices a person behind a curtain who turns out to be his father, Dr. Kang. He cries "DAD" and Jungwoo hears it in the distance as he is burning the corpse of the police and from Hanuel's scream, he confirms that Haneul is Dr. Kang's son. [96] Haneul notices there is something weird about his father's mouth and find the hidden paper inside that has Severance Hospital VIP Room No.4 written on it. He waited in the bunker for about two weeks but no one showed up, so he decided to head out. In the room, there are some papers labelled "Mt. Bukhan Granite Radiocarbon Dating Research Result Report", though the content is not exposed. Haneul packs up and says goodbye to his dad. Haneul walks in the darkness with only his flashlight as he calls out to Heyool.

He stumbles across a videocamera that has night mode and see a sign that says Yeoksam Street, meaning he is still is Gangnam. Haneul doesn't notice, but there are blind killers following him prepared to kill him. As Haneul is playing with the camera, he notices there's a video and plays it. It is a video of Heyool after surviving the fire. A solider finds her and tells her that the people on the surface think everyone in the sinkhole is dead, so the government has to make sure news of survivors does not leak out. The soldier tells Heyool that all surivvors must die for their mission to be complete and proceeds to strangle her. Hanuel breaks down and just as the killers are about to pounce on him, Haneul instinctively protects himself, killing all these maniacs without even realizing it.[97] When Haneul returns to his senses, he is confused as to why there is blood on his hands.[98]

Jungwoo apparently finds Heyool after the soldier strangled her and noticed she was still alive. He took her to a bunker and nursed her till she woke up. He continued to take care of her and then left. After Heyool could not find Jungwoo, she went outside and noticed the light from Severance Hospital. Though she did not want to go back there, she still decided to go.[99]

The soldier who strangled Heyool is able to return to the surface only to be captured by the army corps in the surface.[100] The army corps find documents on Project Sky on the soldier[101] and begin to grab survivors to do human experiments to create the reagent. Unfortunately, the results continued to be a failure, as most people just became mutated humans.[citation needed] They also interrogate the soldier on Dr. Kang's whereabouts, but he continues to tell them that Dr. Kang already committed suicide, which they refuse to believe.[102]

Hanuel is able to begin to see in the dark. He arrives at Severance Hospital and sees some lights on but is not able to cross over as there is a gap in between.[103] Haneul finds a rope that crosses to the hospital but is trying to find another way. He then notices movement in the hospital and uses the video camera to zoom in and sees Heyool.[104]

Haenul begins climbing the rope slowly bit by bit. The rope snaps. Haneul grabs on and notices a bridge in the distance. [105] Haneul is able to pull himself over to the bridge, which turns out to be constructed by the government. However, the bridge begins to collapse and Haneul runs over just in time to grab on the ledge. He hears some sounds and runs toward the hospital thinking it may be Heyool. On the way he runs into the gorilla that Heyool and Bitnara set on fire before. It seems it had been dead for months. [106]

Upon entering the hospital, Haneul finds dead bodies with their hearts missing. [107] Haneul also walks pass Mrs. Byun who had her face crushed by Bitnara. He then cross paths with Bitnara, realizing that it was not Heyool that he had seen, but Bitnara as her skin was burnt red. Bitnara demands his heart and begins attacking him. [108] Bitnara charges at Haneul and they fall out onto a elevator and Haneul manages to shake her off. However, Bitnara begins to climb back up. All the sudden Haneul’s survival instincts kick in and somehow pushes off the elevator where she happens to be pierced by a steel pole. When Haneul comes back to his senses, he can’t remember what just happened and sees a light in the distance. [109]

Haneul finally reaches VIP room No.4. He opens the hatch and feels hot air from above. He also hears a nearby radio sending choppy messages. He only hears bits and pieces before another earthquake occurs. It seems the government was sending a message to all soldiers to eliminate all survivors and also saying that down there, the conditions might be harsh, but up in the surface, it is a burning hell.[110]

As Bitnara is stuck on a piece of steel, she sees a text from her parents that they are in a shelter and tell Bitnara to stay alive. Bitnara begins to tear up and falls on top of the elevator, next to the cellphone.[111]

Haneul looks through the phone and see a picture of his dad next to Heyool. The light at the end of the ladder kind of comes and goes. Haneul continues climbing and one point is about to give up but continues. He then notices a light coming up the later, it turns out to be Heyool.[112]

As Haneul looks down, he sees Heyool climb up to meet him. As they rendez-vouz, corpses begin to fall from the hole above them. Haneul falls off, but Heyool grabs on to him. All the sudden, the ladder gets pulled up. Before the ladder snaps, it drags them to a cliff. Looking out, they see a city and what seems like an lake. In the far distance, they see another ladder. At the end of the ladder, they see what appears to be blue sky and trains that are hanging from it. They begin to head towards the ladder and cross various buildings till they come across the lake. They realize that it is full of corpses with the head floating face up, which Haneul says, according to a myth, when people die full of hate, the body stands erect in water. In the distance, they see a message left by these people on the wall. It seems that this place was a 2nd shelter and these people were most likely killed by the government.[113]

They attempt to get to the ladder but Heyool falls into the water. Then, an earthquake happens were both lava and water from the surface poured into the area. Heyool got out and tells Haneul that she found another route in the water. They head there in the nick of time.[114]

The Terrorist Jungwoo walks towards the government team and asks them what they are looking. One of the men point towards the writing on the building (Everything has Distance)[115] before them, explaining how it was erased when the basement surged towards the ground level. The restoration team seems to have been able to restore it. Jungwoo mentions how he had seen it in the basement and understood that it was related to Haneul and Heyool. One of men proceeds to say that this message means Dr. Kang failed, but Jungwoo understood this meant the opposite. The men ask Jungwoo what his orders were and what to do next, to which Jungwoo replies that the only thing left to do is pray, to pray that a miracle will happen to Haneul and Heyool.[116]

Arriving at the Surface[]

The Disaster Preparatory Committee is able to finally get their hands on the thesis to Project Sky and begin conducting clinical trials. However, there were many failed human experiments, many of teams would skewer the dead skulls on a pole. The thesis was shared with every academic lab across the country, including Daegu center, where they did experiments on recovering severed body parts. The team in Naro Space Center is able to succeed and Changuk Lee's father-in-law and the team use the reagent on themselves. However, they did not plan for the element of starvation. They could no longer withstand that pain and began to eat one another and kill one another to hoard the food. All hell breaks loose and everyone dies.[117]

Some time ago, the Chinese begin to arrive at Daegu and even bring anti-air missiles.[118]

On a eerily surface, Haneul & Heyool climbs out from a hatch; finally getting to the surface. They walk aimelessly while Heyool explains that she surived thanks to the terrorist. They found a radioactive sign and then a radioactive human asking for help. They flee in terror and stays in an area. They rest for a bit until they hear a car drive by that tied radiation humans by a rope. Haneul ran towards the car, leaving Heyool behind. Heyool meets a radiation child which shows her a camp but a missle destroys it. Jungwoo protects her in time. He gives her some radiation equipment and leaves her while directing her to a shelter south of the area.

Heyool then hallucinates from the radiation; seeing Haneul in a crazed state. Heyool wanders aimlessly and finds Seoul University with people hanged. Meanwhile, a helicopter pass by with a lieutanent inside. She makes it to the bunker and finds that the Earth's axis is tilted. Suddently, itnernal gas explosion wereakes havoc at the base and she escapes. Heyool expereinces it as well and wears protective clothing. She suddenly sees her mother but is then taken away and rescued by the lieutanent, leaving her mother behind (although it could had been a halluciantion). The lieutanent explains about a possible reason for the disaster while the heli dodges tornados and cliffs.

They make it to a 2nd bunker and Heyool is given an opporunity to shower. After she showers, she noticed bloodied clothing with Haneul's shirt and choco wrapper inside; implying Haneul was here. Suddenly, gas was released but Heyool escape before fainting. She crawls into the vents to find the lieutanent experimenting on humans and turning them into radiation humans; in an attempt to aquire Project Sky. Heyool was exposed due to a huge rats in the vent and she is thrown into a sewer. She wakes up to find radiation human corpses and talks with a survivor before passing away. She escapes but a cigarettes lights the sewer on fire but Heyool was able to endure it and escape. She sneaks inside the bunker but is found and is shot at but escapes. She enters a building to find someone chained. Shockingly, it was the soldier that choked her at Gangnam. She was going to leave him but he persuaded that he knew where Haneul was.

Heyool helps the soldier break the pipe to which he is handcuffed to and they escape, taking a helicopter. However, the lieutanent shows up and points a gun at the soldier, demanding him take them to where Dr. Kang is doing his research.[119] The soldier explains that Dr. Kang is already dead as he committed suicide, just like he told them many times already. Seeing that the soldiers doesn't have any answers, the adjuntant general decides to kill him, but just as she is going to pull the trigger, she begins to cough blood. The soldier maneuvers the chopper so that she will fall off. Heyool tries to save her but fails. Just as she falls, she fires a shot which hits the fuel tank. Fortunately, they crash land on top of the building of MS Company. Heyool grabs the soldier by the hair and demands to know where Haneul is. Realizing that the solider lied and does not know, she walks away on her own.

The soldier tries to get her to go back with him, but she refuses and says she wants to go back to the corps to find Haneul. Seeig that he cannot convince her, the soldier grabs some chains and decides he will strangle Heyool. However, just as she is about to strangle her, they both notice the spray-painted letters on the wall: "Everything has Distance". It made Heyool remember the phrase in the basement: "Reach the Distant Sky" and wonders what is this "Distance" is referring to. The two notice the pile of bodies, which were most likely carried there by the tornado. They hear a radio message from the "Flood Control Command" for the dead "chemical battalion" saying that 2 hours ago, they have captured Haneul Kang and are transferring him to Daegu.[120]

The soldier and Heyool finally reach Daegu, but are shocked to find that the disaster did not strike here and there is no one around. The soldier is confused as the main force was suppose to be here. They decide to split up and look and the solider gives Hayool a radio to stay in touch. As Heyool explores the place, she finds quite a lot of food, which is odd. Heyool climbs a tall building and tries to call out to see if there is anyone nearby, but no answer. At that moment, there is a cloud of darkness that sweeps by. However, as the clouds subside, she notices Haneul spray painting on the floor "Haneul and Heyool are the end of the distance". The two finally meet up again and run towards each other. The Chinese government that has been observing them realize that Project Sky was successful and decide to launch a nuclear missile, saying if they don't stop them now, they will reach China sooner or later.[121]

Arriving at Daegu[]

FOLLOWING INFO IS LONG
Jungwoo, Changuk Lee and his wife are all on a plane heading to Naro Space Center, carrying a box with the instructions on Plan B and another completed reagent. However, Jungwoo is notified that a missile was fired from Kunmming by the Chinese revolutionary army towards Daegu and realizes that Haneul and Heyool are in danger. They decide to fly back to Daegu to save them.[122]

Changuk jumps off the plane to find his wife and shortly after the plane is shot down by an anti-air missile by the Chinese troops stationed in Daegu.[123]

Changuk lands somewhere in Daegu and passes out. A random solider picks him up and drags him to a testing facility where they are doing human experiments using Dr. Kang's Project Sky thesis to recover severed body parts.[124] For that reason, the soldier administers the reagent to Changuk and cuts his right arm. When Changuk wakes up, he realizes his arm is gone and sees the soldier testing on another subject and runs out the facility.[125]

The party finds a building that Changuk recognizes immediately. It is one of the many research centers that were built in every city by the DPC, serving as shelter and research. Changuk is able to open the door using his ID card. They begin exploring the building and once entering it, they see the sky, but Changuk explains that it is fake. Changuk heads towards the disaster control room adn the sailor insists on following him and asks him how he knows so much. He explains he is a government worker and explains how NASA had predicted that a gamma-ray burst would cause the destruction of the ozone layer in 80 years, which is why Project Sky was started. The sailor is shocked at house scientist could have been so wrong in their prediction in terms of the term frame, but Changuk explains that this disaster is not caused by the gamma ray.[126]

Changuk tells the sailor they have to go to the disaster control room which is on lowest floor to find out what happened. As they reach the door, they see a corpse standing beside the door with a spray paint bottle on his hand. It seems that person spray painted an "X" across the entrance door as a warning. Though Changuk hesitates, the sailor insists saying there is nothing to fear. When they enter, they find many dead corpses. Changuk picks up some papers that have a chart measuring the distances of the planets in the solar system. All the sudden the dead people begin to wake up. Apparently they are test subjects from Project Sky. They begin chasing after Changuk and the sailor. They can run super fast and can even jump super far. As the two run up the escalator, the sailor shoves Changuk down to save himself. Just as Changuk is above to be eaten, Bitnara shows up and kills the revived zombies. She holds up a paper and asks Changuk what Plan B is.[127]

Changuk looks at the paper, it is a top secret document directed to all members of the DPC. It talks about Plan B in case Project Sky fails. The operation tells the commanders of all miliatry, plice and governemtn personel will transfer and report to the disaster committee's chief. All shleters in southern region will be closed and suplies from shelter would be transfer to the main operation site. Furthermore, all DPC reserachers will transfer to the main poeration site. Lastly, the military and police would find recruits to obtain the track down Dr. Kang, Haneul, Heyool and Bitnara and were permitted to use any means necessary to eliminate all obstruciton to the operation. Bitnara grabs Changuk's neck and tells him to tell her about Plan B or would break her neck. It seems Bitnara had begun to come back to her senses and realize how many people she had killed. At the same time, the sailor finds and armory and gets a gun. All the sudden there is another earthquake. The rest of Changuk's party begin running out of the building. The entire building collapses into a sinkhole. The little boy reunites with the little girl. Bitnara crawls out of the hole and brings Changuk with her. She decides to leave and walks away as the little boy calls her by her name. Changuk wakes up and tells the party they should go their separate ways. The sailor shoots a warning shot at Changuk and the little boy charges at him with a knife but gets side-kicked into the hole.[128]

The sailor aims his gun and is about to kill the rest of the party. In the distance, Suki Kang is aiming her sniper at the sailor. All the sudden, there is a aftershock and they begin to run away. Suki Kang then picks up her sniper and walks away. The sailor points a gun at Changuk and demands to know the second plan, Plan B. However, Changuk explains that only a few from the DPC know details about the second project. All he knows is that when it comes into effect, the committee, leaders of each department and the president are suppose to go to Geohung, Jeolla and assemble at the Naro Space Center. They begin to travel there and pass by Suncheon. However, the water seems to have blocked the pathway and because the current is too strong, they cannot swim across. As they are thinking about how to cross, the old woman realizes that she is next in getting killed for food so she panics and begins running. The sailor immediately shoots her and kills her. Changuk can't take anymore of this and decides that he should just commit suicide. Just as he is falling off the cliff, the little grabs him and tells him that they must survive together.[129]

Changuk wakes up from his fall and the sailor tells them they can use the nearby rafts, but would have to row together. However, the current is too strong and the raft seems to have crashed into something causing a hole at the bottom. As water begins to seep in through the hole, the sailor grabs the little girl and shoves her head into the hole to stop it from leaking. Changuk tries to stop him, but get kicked away. The sailor gets angry and points his gun at Changuk to kill him, but suddenly they crash into a spaceship and fall over.[130]

Changuk crashes and falls into a space shuttle. At first, he thinks its a shuttle secretly developed by the Naro Space Center, but later sees the dead astronauts and the Chinese flag. He then sees a recorder and plays it to see the events unfolding. The date, according to Changuk is six-months ago, which is right after the disaster, as there is still clear sky. The recording show how the ship falls back to Earth when encountering Jupiter. Water begins to flood the ship and Changuk grabs on to the little girl trying to grab the window, but he has no right arm. Suddenly, his arm grows back and he is able to pull them out of the ship. However, the sailor is waiting for them. He shoots the girl and in anger, Changuk rips off his arm with the gun.[131]

As Changuk sits by the fire, he begins to explain the disaster, basically saying that the problem occured at the micro level, at the quantum level, where the theory of relativty does not apply. As he is beginning to explain more, he begins to cough and asks for some water. Just as Haneul and Heyool go look for water, they notice Bitnara approaching. Haneul gets nervous as he just knows her as a crazy person, but Heyool recognizes Bitnara and hugs her. They bring back water and and food for Changuk and Haneul notices that today happens to be Changuk's birthday and they just so happen to have a candle, so they celebrate together. As Haneul and Heyool go grab more water and food, Changuk begins to explain to Bitnara that the basement is a way to get to Plan B, as Plan A was always in preparatin for Plan B. Furthermore, he says that if it is the two of them (referring to Haneul and Heyool), he believes they can revert it all.[132]

Arriving at Jeju Island[]

Hanuel, Heyool and Bitnara arrive at a deer farm. They begin to look for a map. Haneul finds some deer antler liquor, joking about getting drunk on it. Heyool finds the map and is able to pinpoint their location, saying they are close to their grandma's house. At the same time, she sees a picture and seems to recognize the old lady in the picture (who is actually her grandma), but cannot remember. Haneul finds a door with a label saying Baekrok Lab. They find a dead person inside (who turns out to be Heyool's mom), but decide to just leave her there and head back to the house. When they reach the house, they check out the rooms. Heyool finds her old room and picture frames.

Among them, she notices pictures of her middle school and high school graduation which doesn' t makes sense, as according to her, her mother never attended those graduations. Heyool begins to wonder if perhaps her mother had been looking for her. There are also pictures of Seoul University, Severance Hospital and Namsan Tower, all post-disaster. Heyool then realizes that the woman she had seen when she was caught in the chopper's net was actually her mother. She looks in the closet and finds the same pink blouse. It has a softener smell, meaning it was just washed recently.[133]

Taiwan Space Station[]

Jupiter crushes the moon. Jungwoo, Suki and Haneul reach Taiwan. Continnental nation came togehter to build a governemnt refugee center, mainly the Chinese government. Presidnet of CHina welcomes Haneul and the Chinese people call Haneul their hope. Haneul goes to sleep with the help of a sleeping pill and dreams of Heyool. Suki wakes Haneul up and tells him it is time as after 6 hours, Jupiter would destroy the Earth.[134]

As Jungwoo and Haneul eat, Jungwoo explains how the disaster started in China and how it was White behind all this, but that they were only the ones to start the fire, the DPC was the culprit. As Haneul prepares, they spray the shuttle with the letters HOPE and they also prepare a uniform for Haneul. Haneul enters the spaceship and as it prepares to launch, Jungwoo and Suki prepare for their death. As the destruction of Earth was about to happen; prior, Heyool's Mother calls out to a man and both begin to talk; revealing she had survived. She explains how she was able to secretly escape from the submarine, and the two talk about the plan to sneak onboard the spaceship, kill Hanuel and its crew, the man hands over a bag that has a uniform identical to the uniform Heyool wore, Heyool's Mother explained she planned to impersonate her daughter if she where to run into Hanuel, however later on the ship, its revealed Heyool's Mother had actually also saved Heyool from the submarine during her escape, and she puts her unconscious daughter on the pod, biding goodbye as well as hoping she could make things right. After the disaster, on February 14th, the Earth is destroyed.[135]

After one year, Haneul reaches Tiangong, the new space station. The spaceship attaches to the station, where there is some gravity so Haneul can walk and also take off his helmet. Haneul follows the instructions and completes the fueling and distribution, then proceeds to update the orbit. He does his preparations and leaves the station. He begins to look at Bitnara's phone that has the photo of Heyool and his dad. He begins to tear up, feeling lonely and scared.[136]

"The Distant Future"[]

At an unknown time later, Heyool wakes up from the pod (which has crash landed on a forest) not far from her is the trail where the space ship has also crashed, as a confused Heyool investigates her surroundings, she is shocked to see the stars and when she climbs up a hill, she is shocked to see the lights of a city, before being startled by a airplane flying overhead, at first she contemplates her survival and is sad to think she was the only survivor, before a person (presumably Hanuel) approaches her and calls her name, she looks at him and tearfully smiles before saying "hi".

Criticism & Evaluation[]

Generally, the evaluation was not good due to the long hiatus, paid service, and problems with the development of Season 4. Despite this, it is good overall it seems in terms of the story.[137] Here are some critcism from Korean readers:[138]

  • Development Problems - Stuff like very differcult to understand as the story combines past and present events. For more info, refer to the citation here.[138]
  • Serial-related Problems - There was a long hiatus that was criticized which made readers to forget this webtoon. In addition, it was hard to remember the story due to the paywall; making thing complicated.

Note: There is other criticism but is very long and differcult to understand. So refer to this citation here.[138]

Frequently Asked Questions[]

The webtoon has and is known for many unanswered questions and confusing events as to how it happened. Of course, there were answers explained in later episodes but many were not or left ambigiuous. Below are some questions that was left unanswered or is questioned by people. We attempt to answer them based on logical or the closest reasons but many others qustions are not answered as we cannot think of a reason. Thus could be seen as a plot hole unless other Super string webtoons could answer it.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD
Season 1
  • Ep.10, how did the protags escape the tiger & where did it come from.
    • The only conclusion is that Haneul open the door just as the tiger pounces and into the cannibals. The tiger came back after eating the cannibals as its mouth has blood. The tiger may had wandered into the lava area from above the area; the area where the protags came across the soldiers. There were tigers there when Jungwoo shot their cages. Thus it could be reasoned that the tiger break away from its cage and left.
  • Ep. 12, why did Jungwoo had to save only Haneul or Heyool? As both of them are the key to save Earth.
    • In terms of behind the scenes, it is likely the author was still planning stuff. In terms of story, it is possible that he knew both would live due to the tardigrade agent so he says one as it would be easier. Like a test.
  • Ep.15, how did Haneul end up at a higher cliff?
    • The only conclusion would be that Haneul, having super human abilities, had to had pushed his body so far to get Heyool to safety that he may had jumped afterwards accidentally.

Season 2

  • Why was there a fire wind when opening the VIP locked door but when Haneul opened it, there was nothing?
    • The best reason is that during the first time when opening the door, the surface above was littered with fire winds but time passed. Thus the fire winds may had dissappeared through time when Haneul opened.
  • Haneul saw Heyool in the hospital but she was nowhere to be seen until the end of the season?
    • It could be a trick by the author as Haneul could had seen Bitnara whom was red all over. However, he could had seen Heyool but Haneul hadn't found her when he was in the hospital. After all, it was quite large.
  • Why does Haneul need a flash light when he has night vision?
    • The possible explanation is that he doesn't know how to use it. During this time, he doesn't understand the reagent in him. So he may had semi-automatically activate it.
  • In the Severance hospital, VIP room 4 has a locked door. Opening it reveals a long, vertical crater that in the upper layer connects to another broken city filled with water. How could a building connect to a cave like area?
    • This seems like a very big plot hole. The best explanation is that when Gangam fall into the sink hole, an inevitable cave in happened. It could be reason that the vip room never existed before the disaster but was created by the government when they send their men to get to the sinkhole. Perhaps they found the closest access point to Gangnam and created the locked door to get in and out which happens to be Severance hospital as it has the most height. Which would mean that the hospital was close to a "mud wall."

Season 3

  • Where was Haneul after chasing the car. How did he get to Daegu all of a sudden?
    • It is likely possible that the author sort of forgot about him while focusing on Heyool's POV. However, there are implications that the author didn't. After Haneul's car chasing, it is presumed that he came across the miltary 2nd bunker or was captured. He was forced or used the shower before escaping. As sometime later, the military reported they had captured Haneul. The oddity is that the military dissappeared and that Haneul was the only one at Daegu. It is assumed that he escape again but the military were forced to retreat or something.

Season 4

  • Ep.1 - Isn't it Jupiter entering Earth's orbit, why does it say Saturn?
    • Translation error.
  • In Ep.2, how did Bitnara get to the surface? She should had been trapped in Gangnam and the ladder was cut. In addition to the city of lake caved in due to water and lava.
    • It is unknown how she was able to get out and can be seen as a plot hole. The best answer is that she was able to find another way while relapsing from amnesia off-screen.
  • Ep.16 - In Changuk Lee's dream, his wife calls him Haneul, is he actually Haneul?
    • This is a translation error that is completely misleading. The correct translation is "husband".
  • What is Plan B?
  • In the paper of DPC, there is a list of people that need to be secured, including Dr.Kang, Haneul, Heyool, and Bitnara. The first two may make sense, but how did they know that Heyool and Bitnara also had the reagent.
    • The only conclusion was those papers were made after knowing the two. With that, how did they know the two? For Heyool, it could make sense as she with Haneul most of the time so they could eventually found out. Although there isn't really any indication of such. However, with Bitnara, the same reason could apply but she isn't really known like the other 3, it is hard to say they would know. She may had been discovered when she somehow get to the surface in season 4.

Season 5

  • How did Heyool's Mother survive the radioactive surface in Seoul and how did she get to Jeju Island?
    • She likely gain the tardigrade reagent somehow. Likely White supplied her with one but how they got it is unknown. It is also unknown how she got to Jeju Island but was implied she was sent there to stop Project Sky.
  • It is implied that the reagents effects were wearing off as Heyool's wounds were not healing. In that case, how did Hanuel manage to survive the sun's solar blasts to complete Plan 0?
    • Highly likely an error but it could reason Jungwoo and the Chinese government may had made one more reagent in time before Hanuel leaves Earth. Although it may be not clear if they ever got the reagent blueprint.
  • Why did Heyool's Mother changed sides in the end so abruptly?
    • Although it was not directly stated, it is implied that she had the reagent before hand. This was indidcated when she transported Heyool to the chruch as saying that even if she doesn't recognize her, she should let her go. In addition to her ghastly appearance, this led that she had the reagent. If so, where did she get one is unknown.

Media[]

  • Drama - On November 22, 2016, a contract with "Value Culture & Media" to make a live drama of this webtoon. But for six years, there has been no updates.[139][140] In June 2023, the current status was revealed that it is in planned development status as of January 2023 and is scheduled to be produced by Studio Dragon.[141]

Trivia[]

  • Strangely, the official English disregards the behind the scenes where the author and illustrator explain their process and answer questions in the epilogue. Furthermore, fan art from other Korean authors such as Park Taejoon from Lookism was also disregarded.
  • In the official English season 1, there were a lot of readers finding the current story unrealistic.
  • There are quite a few translation errors in the English Webtoon:
    • In Season 4, Ep. 1, Changuk Lee has a nightmare where Jupiter enters Earth's orbit, but the English translates to Saturn instead.
    • In Season 4, Ep. 16, Changuk Lee has a dream of his wife calling to him, calling him husband, but the English translates it to Haneul, which is complete incorrect and misleading.
  • In the English webtoon, this webtoon has the second most views with currently 28.1 million out of all of the Superstring Webtoon. With Hanlim Gym third.
    • Has the third highest ratings for English webtoon with it currently 9.61.
  • It appears that on the official webtoons of different languages, it seems that after season 3 ended, it is common for there to be a long abrupt hiatus.
  • Supposedly there was a radiation survivor named "Gian."[142] It is not clear who it was but likely the man found in the sewer by Heyool in season 3, ep.10
  • In season 3, ep. 14, someone mentions the 1998 film, "Armageddon."
  • The webtoon currently holds the longest in terms of seasons. With 5 seasons.
