Background[]
Housekeeper was initally developed during 2015 with an initial concept. Such as how the protagonist orignally looked and a different title. It was held on hold for a while until much later in the years.[11][12]
Housekeeper is set in an alternate/parallel dimension in the real world. In this storyline, Nazi Germany won WWII and Einstein finished his Theory of All Things. Thus, even though set in the mid 1900s, because of the invention of Androids, the technology is far more advanced than the current 21 century in the main dimension. Furthermore, even though it is a parallel world, up till now, the only characters that appear in both the housekeeper and main dimensions are Kawooka and Kangtawoo. There is no mention of White, the Disaster Preparatory Committee or the Black Wing Clan, all which have played important roles in the main dimension.

Setting/Locations[]
Most of the events of Housekeeper occur in Europe, 17 years after the creation of Androids.[20] However, since it is a parallel dimension where history was changed, names of countries are no longer used primarily, rather, continents or larger regions are labelled as "Sectors", each given a 2-3 letter code names (i.e. EU for Europe). Countries are then categorized into these Sectors, with the region code first followed by a number code of 1-3 digits to identify the country (i.e. EU-315).
There are also special sectors that do not represent a country, but a particular base (i.e. army base or medical center). Based on the Webtoon, there are a total of 1094 sectors with 941 sectors infected (by the end of Season 2)[21]. Below is the general naming structure of the sectors:
Geographical Sectors (based on geographical area)
- EU - Europe
- RUS - Russia
- AS - Asia[22]
- AF - Africa[23]
- AM - America[24]
- NAM - South America[25]
- PA - Australia (Pacific Asia) with exception of PA-007 which is in the North Sea in Europe.
- MIA - Central Asia (Middle Asia)
Function Sectors (based on function not geographical area)
Some of the sectors may overlap the sectors above (i.e. some medical zones may be within the EU sector, or PA-001 and PA-001 being under the President's Special Forces)
- M - Special medical zones
- WG - World Government
- F - Factory
- President's Special Forces- areas specially under the jurusdiction of the special forces, such as PA-007. These are often labelled on the map with the Special Forces logo.[26]
- AR - Army
Each region/area is then subdivided by sectors which are 1-3 digit codes. Some sectors are only mentioned but do not make an appearance:
Below is a overview map of the general area of the sectors as well as the specific sectors that have been mentioned in the Webtoon. Please note that this is only approximate and based on the hints and maps provided in the Webtoon, as specific sub-sectors are not listed by country name, so it can often be tricky. Furthermore, the list below provides a detail of the specific sub-sectors that made an appearance:
Geographical Sectors[]
Sector EU (Europe) |
---|
|
Germania |
---|
The capital of the Third Reich. Technically part of the EU sector, it was closed off for some reason.[40] According to the map, the specific location of Germania seems to be near Berlin, as it is shown to be on the northeastern side of Germany.[41] |
Sector AM (America) |
---|
|
Sector PA (Australia/Pacific Asia) |
---|
|
Sector RUS (Russia) |
---|
|
Sector MIA (Central Asia) |
---|
It is explicitly stated that MIA is Central Asia, thus, most likely MIA stands for Middle Asia, which kind of conveys the same idea. |
Sector AS (Asia) |
---|
Presumably Asia as in a simulation the generals talk about moving the troops from RUS (Russia) to AS. Later in Season 3 it is confirmed to be so and furthermore, it seems to include 2 subdivision: East Asia (EAS) and South Asia (SAS).
|
Other Sectors and Locations |
---|
The sectors below are mentioned though sub-sectors are never mentioned, thus they are grouped here:
Outer Space:
|
Functional Sectors[]
Sector WG
WG most likely stands for World Government. It is only mentioned once as the region of the presidential palace.
- Sector WG-0 - A region located on the other side of the European continent. The presidential palace is located there. The shape of the presidential palace resembles the Great Hall of the People, which Nazi Germany planned to build.
Sector M (Special Medical Zones)
- M-23 - Is located inside EU Sector. Holds the biggest Life Science Lab.[50]
- M-42 - special medical zone where the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is located.[51]
President's Special Forces
- PA-001 - the HQ of President's Special Forces & the place where the "infinite power engine" is produced located in the northwestern part of Australia. It is managed by the special forces under the direct order of the President and not even Hermann Croucher is allowed to enter.[52]
- PA-007 (North Sea) - Center of Interstellar Research under the jurisdiction of the President's Special Forces. It is said they were secretly conducting experiments on aliens. Kangtawoo was nearby hidden under the ocean. It is located somewhere in an island in the middle of the ocean of east of England and west of Holland
- ??? (Mali) - Based on a map in Season 2, Ep.39, it seems that there is a President's Army base in former Mali near the border of former Algeria.
- ??? (Egypt) - Based on the map of Season 2, Ep.39, there is a President's Army base in former Egypt near the border of former Sudan.
- ??? (Czech, Slovakia or Austria) - Based on the map of Season 2, Ep.39, there appears to be a President's Army base somewhere in border of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria.
Sector AR (Army Zones)
- AR-0 - a special military zone and headquarters of the Martial Law Troops.[53] It is the location where Katarina von Bayern lives.
- AR-057 - location where they place political criminals.[54] A concentration camp.
Sector F (Factory Zones)
- F-05 - Another factory zone located at northern France.[55]
- F-06 - It is an industrial zone where the Oz House branch is located. It is suppose to be the place where research and development of new products takes place and also the place where the Soldieroid was first developed. According to the map shown by Mamiya, it seems F-06 would be somewhere in France.[56]

Pre World War 2
In 1933, Adolf Hitler forms the Third Empire and slowly organizes his plans for world domination. The Soviet Union discovers Kangtawoo in the North Pole and build a Soviet Bolshevik Institute with a secret lab 243 meters underground to research it. At some point in time the Third Empire finds out about it and carries out Operation Barbossa to overtake the Soviet Union and succeeds[58]. In In 1940, Professor Oppenheimer and Dorothy Crawford are sent by Hitler to the secret lab to study Kangtawoo.[59] World War 2 Team Nerthus researches the alien tech within Kangtawoo either in the North Pole or perhaps it was moved to the and develops the Nerthus weapon, which later becomes the core of the AI Androids. Team Nerthus helps Germany win the war with the Nerthus weapon. However, seeing the great destruction that it brought, the leader of Team OZ falls apart. Post World War 2 After Nazi Germany won the war, a unified government was established. However, 4 years later, in 1945, a rebellion arose, overthrowing Hitler and executing him.[60] The Third Empires thus collapsed and the World United Government was established on the principles of democracy so a dictatorship would never arise again.[61][62] In the 1950s, Oppenheimer gathered a group of genuiesus, including scientist, software programmers, mechanical engineers to join the existing Team Nerthus to form Team OZ. Together they create the unlimited energy core.[63] In 1955, Albert Einstein completes the theory of all things, which ushered in new industrial developments that surpassed several generations, specifically AI technology, signalaling the 4th Industrial Revolution. [64] In the same year, Team OZ created the first android which Dorothy's son, Briant, names "Fredrich" (inspired by Friedrich the Great). Team OZ presents him at the android presentation. However, Fredrich detects shooting sounds from afar and the event is stopped as Friedrich heads towards the shooting just in time to protect Robert McMillan.[65] Because of the incident, Robert is convinced that the Venus Project will not work unless there is a leader that is not human, but AI. Dororthy rejects the idea, but Hermann overhears the conversation. Hermann convinces Robert to a plan where they transfer Friedrich from an android body to a biological body and let him run for presidency. Robert agrees. On October 2, 1955, during a core output conversion experiment, Hermann intentionally pretends that the experiment has gone of out of control and that Friedrich is destroyed, along with all his memory data. He apologies to Dorothy who doesn't blame him. The truth is that Fredrich's memory data was transferred to a new biological body and rebooted on April 2, 1956. Also, at this time, all Team Oz members except Dorothy agree with Croucher and allow Friedrich to enter politics and successfully gain the support of the people. On April 1, 1959, Friedrich Bismarck was inaugurated as President of the World United Government Government. Through discussion with Team OZ (not including Dorothy), Friedrich establishes the AI laws as well as the central database network that connects info from all over the world. On Robert and Hermann's request, Friedrich visits the OZ House, seeing the new AIs and the AI laws, among them, Article 1, Section 7, which states that A.Is must not lie, causes him discomfort as his existence is no different from a lie. Afterwards, he takes a picture with Dorothy, and Briant and Penelope also come and take pictures. Briant hears a subtle sound coming from Friedrich and recognizes him as the same Android A-0001 from 5 years ago. It turns out Briant had spent quite a long time with Friedrich as a kid, playing with him every time Dorothy went to the research center. As a child, he was able to detect the minute frequency emitted by the core and memorized the sound.[66] Fredrich brushes off Briant's suspicion and leaves while two team OZ members talk with him and find out about the buzzing sound. The two team members report to the rest of the team and it is revealed that it is the result of Friedrich's core's frequency. Friedrich proposes that they tell Dorothy the truth, to which Hermann suggest that it is not necessary and they can leave Dorothy out.[67] However, Croucher's response enrages Emily, who grabs him by the collar, but Robert steps in and tells her that perhaps it's time to part ways. Friedrich is torn seeing the division arising in Team OZ because of him.[68] Despite team OZ members trying to curve Briant's suspicions, Briant insists that it is the same Friedrich and goes to the presidential palace to look for him. The guards try to chase him off and when one of them almost injures Briant, out of reaction, Friedrich jumps in to save him.[69] He carries Brian into the office and confesses that he is is the android from the presentation and asks him to keep this a secret for the time being. Friedrich reminisces the argument between the members of Team OZ and decide that he does not want to be their source of division any longer and decides to confess everything on April 1st of next year. Briant's dad scolds him for lying about going to school, but when Briant insists he promised to keep a secret and accepts punishment, his father reconsiders and lets him off.[70] In September 1959, the Super Soldier program was completed, and by January 1960, the first man-made satellite was launched to usher in the era of digital communication. In March of that same year, the three laws of robotics were passed, with the release date set for September 15th.[71]
On April 1, 1960, Friedrich holds a press conference to mark the anniversary of his inauguration. That morning, Briant urges his mother, Dorothy, to take the day off, saying there's an important guest arriving. During his speech, Friedrich declares that the age of violence is over and a new era of robotic revolution has begun. He then announces his decision to step down, having fulfilled his mission, and passes his authority to Merkel. His declaration shocks everyone, but Friedrich calmly walks past the reporters, answering no questions, it is impossible to implement the Venus Project anyway due to the excessive population, and that it is right for him to step down to prevent Team Oz from being divided because of him.[72] He visits Dorothy and confesses everything and asks her to destroy him, the cause of Team Oz's disbanding, but is dumbfounded when Dorothy flatly refuses. Robert misunderstands that the resignation speech was instigated by Dorothy and comes to Dorothy's house in anger. Friedrich intercepts Robert, who even pulls out a gun during a conversation, and tries to calm him down, but his actions are stopped by a hacking tool. Just as Dorothy was trying to calm Robert down, Friedrich senses a stone flying through the window and realizes that the person who threw the stone was one of his supporters. Friedrich just watches as his hard-core supporters, who have turned into rioters, break into Dorothy's house and threaten her. Although Robert attempts to release his lock to calm the supporters, the mob smashes Robert's communicator. As he is unable to move, he watches helplessly as the mob, which becomes even more frantic, kills Dorothy's husband and Briant, and tries to calculate why this happened, but is confused and does not know why. Aftermath of Briant's Death In 1958, the government started registering citizens online. However, Team OZ was not put in the records and all written records about them were deleted. Team OZ records were deleted, including their existence, achievements and deeds. At some point in time, they created OZ House.[73] P-Flu Outbreak In 1960, September 8th, there is a news report of the researchers of Team OZ contracting the P-flu. One week later, on the 15th, the AI was officially released.[74] At that time many journalists were curious about the developers (Team OZ) and attempted to gather information about them. However, the secret police (the Gestapo) from the Third Reich was revived to squash all that information. At the same time, Article 0 (hidden rule) created but not announced by the government.[75] At the same time, the World United Government annouced the "Three Rules of Robots" to completely control AI and established laws in accordance to those rules.[76] In 1963, numerous groups, suspicious of the World United Governmented, wanted to fight for the independence of an own country, leading to 1249 UN personell being killed in an urban warfare in Sector RUS-837. The Soldieroid Project was announced by President in response to this event in order to avoid military casualties. The project was completed 2 years later in 1965, manufacturing more than 5 million Soldieroids. However for that past 12 years, the soldieroids were never deployed. Apart from being inefficient (as they need fossil fuel to function) and a terribly weak neurocircuit security system, they had the same AI as humanoid androids, so are bound by the same law and cannot attack humans. They were stored away until the P-Flu outbreak.[77] In 1976, the era of permanent workers disappeared and 80% of the world's population stopped working.[78] For this reason and other issues such as inflation resulting from currency integration, environmental pollution, and food shortage began to cause rebellions to rise in various places. Creation of AI 17 years ago, the capital of the Third Reich, Germania, was closed off[79] 13 years ago, the government begins testing soldieroids using simulation of potential p-flu outbreaks. A record in an old computer in Sector F-06 records a simulation where AI are dressed as P-flu patients and simulate their movements while soldieroids take them out.[80] P-Influenza Outbreak 17 years after the creation of AI, the P-Influenza outbreak occurs.[81] 279 days after the outbreak, they leave Sector F-6[82] 285 days after the outbreak, Hasty's team infiltrate EU-0[83] Creation of Navilland Escape to PA-007 Assault on Germania 6.2 billion of the population is infected with 941 of the 1094 sectors affected. President Friedrich Bismarck declares the Venus War to eliminate all P-flu infected patients.[84] Venus War The infection rate reaches 92.4%, with only 620 million people left.[85] |
Mythologies & Miscellaneous References[]
Housekeeper has many names, weapons, etc that are referenced to many myths and miscellaneous references like Wizard of Oz.
Criticism & Evaluation[]
Some evaluation and criticism from Korean readers:[86]
Evaluation[]
Season 1
The overall evaluation is good for the top-notch writing and directing, seamless storytelling by Yongtaek Chae. However, the atmosphere of the work is consistently gloomy and emphasizes tragic elements. Unlike other works, it is closer to a disaster story about surviving endless hardships rather than pursuing passion or effort . It is a work that is recommended to readers who like a hopeless atmosphere without dreams or hope.
Season 2
The Super Soldier Unit, is also well-received for its diverse personalities, individuality, design, and fighting style, rather than being consistently loyal to the president's direct AI. In addition, Neil Armstrong from Hasty's group has been well-received since his appearance, and he has shown many cool aspects in speech and battle scenes
Season 3
The core plot and story of the world view began to be fully revealed, it is receiving favorable reviews again, and the rating also completely recovered. The past arc where various plots were recovered and the subsequent development were greatly praised, and the ending was also widely praised as a happy ending.
Criticism[]
Season 1
- World United Government's Past - Due to the predecessor of WUG and their attire, there is presence of Nazis which left concerns but was generally accepted as well as there wasn't any glorifications of Nazis.
Season 2
- No Super String - Despite this being a Super String work, many readers didn't know which left a mixed feelings between expereinced and new readers. Some were reluctant in accepting the facts while others hoped that it is not part of Super String despite the obvious. Strangely, this work was announced before its arrival of being a Super String work but it would seem that because the title was changed and that YLAB didn't announced it, this could be why.
- When Kangtawoo appears, the rating for those episodes decreased slightly.
- Appearance of Suki Kang - When she appeared in the review, despite it being a review, the rating was 9.63, and the majority of the comments were filled with complaints about the confirmed participation in the worldview. However, the main story of Housekeeper itself ended well without much influence on Superstring.
- Battle Plot Too Long - It took 27 episodes to defeat one super soldier. In the battle between Chiyou and Ask, is evaluated as being longer than the battle between Dietrich, although it is shorter than the battle between Dietrich, with episodes 42-56. In particular, in episode 49, Hasty almost defeats Chiyou , and they talk about their values, and Chiyou, who was thought to have been defeated, is revived, which increases the plot, which lowered the rating.
Season 3
- Mixed Development Speed - is very fast from the beginning. Up until episode 6, there is a general positive atmosphere about the incredibly fast development speed. However, there are also opinions that are regretful that the characters are eliminated too quickly due to this fast development. In episode 16 the rating dropped to the mid-9s due to the fast development speed and other reasons. However, it recovered to the 9.9s starting from episode 18 when some of the super soldiers reappeared.
- After that, before the Siegfried battle, the rating dropped slightly due to the slow development speed, which was the opposite of the evaluation in the beginning
- Death of Many - There were many characters that died or retired such as the new Super Soldiers. Some felt it was too early for retiring or killing them.
- Katarina's Redemption - Some don't like that she is a supporting character now and become "good."
Media & Merchandise[]
Media[]
- 3D Anime - The webtoon will have its own 3D animation series created by Studio Gale, a children's animation company. It seems that it will have ten episodes with 24 minutes per episode. It has yet to be aired.[87]
Recently, new progress of the anime is made with still images and development plan:
- "The animation <Housekeeper> is an OTT series depicting a solid story based on the original webtoon of the same name, unique AI characters, spectacular action unfolding as they fight against the world government to protect their human masters, and human drama shown by AI robots. The animation will be produced as a 3D animation with a 2D look targeting teenagers and adults aged 15 and above. With the goal of producing a total of 3 seasons, we are currently producing 2 episodes of Season 1 first."[88]
Merchandise[]
- YLAB Store - In the official Ylab Store, there is a couple of merchandises such as acrylic stands:
- YLAB Store Plus - new merch such as pins.
Trivia[]
- The original title for this webtoon is, "The Maid is Always By My Side," during December 2015 but was changed.[12]
- Serializing this webtoon took incredibly long since December 2015 as it was on hold.[12] Production resumed after recruitng Yongtaek Chae. There were delays afterwards as he felt he was not up to the task and start with Reawakened Man and Yuhyun was hired after the announcement. It took three years and one month to be serialized.[11]
- According to the author, the idea of the Webtoon came to him when he was eating Ramen and watching a zombie movie. A weird thought came into his head, that zombies never wanted to be zombies, but were treated as monster. Then the idea of a Webtoon about protecting zombies came up as well as the idea of AI Robots being the ideal role of protecting them.[89]
- Neo Confucianism was mentioned.[90]
- Housekeeper was initially going to be released in Japan. Thus old storyboards were right to left.[91]
- A Korean reader hypotheized that Hasty's number meant to be an "angel number" which symbolize a warning of "to not believe in anyone." This was false though confirmed by the author.[92]
- In April Fools 2024, super soldiers are reborn as humans attending school with the P-Flu & Venus Project not existing.
- The author revealed that he did not think about the character names, and only later did he find out that Will Smith's character (Neville) in the movie "Legend" had the same name as Navil, one of the main characters (in Korean, Navil and Neville are pronounced the same). As for Hasty, the author just wanted to come up with a cute name.[89]
- Housekeeper is one of the few Super String to have merch.
- Strangely, there are many characters with the name "von" in it. A total of 7 characters.
- In Ep. 1, there was a reference of Marlboro Black, a brand of cigarettes and Nestle on the choco bar. Then in ep. 2, there is reference to Kellogg, a cereal company.(show pic)(show pic)
- In Blue String Webtoon, Get Schooled & Hanlim Gym, there are Housekeeper Easter Eggs:
- Housekeeper had a collab with Evolution Girl. A Korean Mobile Game where Hasty and Mamiya appears as characters. There is also some brief recap story from the webtoon.
- Collab Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqSTwPNDVFs
- Some Korean Housekeeper readers love the idea that this webtoon finally had connections with Superstring while other doesn't like it.[93]
- It seems that in Naver webtoon, when Kangatwoo appeared in the webtoon, some fans began to explain all the lore, stories, and spoilers in the comment section of Housekeeper with possible excitement. Apparently this annoyed those only read Housekeeper. The other main reason is how poor the management of Super String and thus has a bad reputation.
- In the end of the final season, korean readers responded with requesting for the publication of a single volume and the production of a key ring. In addition of has a majority of very negative opinions about Superstring and cheered that there weren't any final crossover.
